I’ve been travelling full time since 2010, and a duffel of one kind or another regularly makes it into our packing setup. Right now there are two in the house: a leather Floto that Jess gave me as an anniversary present a few years ago, and a pair of thin Outdoor Products duffels that pack down into their own little stuff sacks and have done everything from laundry duty to overflow luggage.
Between them they cover the two very different things people mean when they search for a travel duffel bag.
One of those things is a squashable nylon bag that clears a budget airline’s sizer. The other is a leather or canvas weekender that looks nice in a hotel lobby and (with a bit of care) will still look nice in twenty years. I use them for different types of trip, and you will need to decide what type you want to make sure it travels with your rather than languishing in the back of a cupboard.
If you just want the answers: if I was buying today the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L is the carry-on duffel I’d choose for most trips, because on Patagonia’s own dimensions it fits inside the US sizer with room to spare.
For a leather weekender, the Kenneth Cole Reaction Colombian leather duffel gets you most of what my Floto gives me for a fraction of the money, and the Frye Logan Overnight is the one to buy if you want the heirloom version. The BAGSMART duffel is a cheap packable bag for shopping on the way home.
I own the Floto and the Outdoor Products pair, and I’ll tell you how they’ve held up. Every figure in this article comes from the manufacturer’s own page or, where the maker publishes nothing, from the Amazon listing, read in October 2026, and the comparison table says which is which.
Table of Contents:
Quick Picks: The Best Travel Duffel Bags
The quick picks, with the full write-ups and the comparison table further down.
- Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L, the best carry-on duffel. 40 litres, 19.7 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches, just over a kilo, and the only technical duffel here that fits the US 22 x 14 x 9 inch sizer on paper. Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee behind it.
- Osprey Transporter Duffel 40, the best duffel you can carry as a backpack. A removable harness, YKK zips under a rain flap, and Osprey’s any-reason All Mighty Guarantee. Over the US sizer on depth, so not one for strict carry-on.
- The North Face Base Camp Duffel S, the toughest. 50 litres of PVC-coated 1000D fabric with a ballistic nylon base. A road-trip and checked-bag duffel, not a carry-on.
- BAGSMART Duffle Bag (Medium), the budget pick. Personal-item sized, 385 grams, a wet pocket for swimwear, and cheap enough to live in a suitcase as the bag you fill with shopping.
- Kenneth Cole Reaction Colombian Leather Duffel, the best leather weekender for the money. Full-grain leather at a price the heritage brands can’t touch.
- Filson Small Rugged Twill Duffle, the canvas heritage pick. Waxed cotton twill, bridle leather, a solid brass YKK zip, made in the USA.
- Frye Logan Overnight Duffle, the premium leather weekender. The closest thing on sale to the bag I own.
Duffel or Weekender? Choose by Trip Type
A 40 litre nylon duffel and a leather weekender will give you a similar experience in terms of capacity, but are otherwise almost entirely different bags. The first thing you need to decide is which trip you’re buying for, which will help you decide which bag to buy.
| The trip | What you need | Buy this kind of bag |
|---|---|---|
| Flying carry-on only, including on a budget airline | A bag that fits a sizer when full, weighs next to nothing empty, and doesn’t care about rain | A technical nylon duffel around 40 litres: the Patagonia Black Hole 40L |
| Road trip, a week or less | Something that sits in a boot and comes out at a hotel. Weight and sizer rules don’t apply | A leather or canvas weekender: the Kenneth Cole, the Filson or the Frye. This is what I use mine for |
| Train and a city weekend | Carried for real distances: platform to hotel, hotel to a second hotel. Needs to carry well, and leather gets heavy | A duffel with a backpack harness: the Osprey Transporter 40, or a travel backpack |
| Checked bag, expedition, or the car gets loaded with wet things | Abuse resistance above everything | The North Face Base Camp |
| A spare bag for the way home | Packs flat inside your main bag and holds the shopping | The BAGSMART, or any thin packable duffel |
| A gift | Something they’ll still be using in a decade | Leather, with a warranty you’ve read: the Frye. Jess bought me a leather one and, a few years on, she was right |
For a lot of people the answer is one of each. Our leather bag does road trips and the packable pair does everything else, and neither one costs anything to store.
How I Judge a Duffel I Haven’t Owned
Soft bags are close to a commodity category. The technical brands draw on a small pool of fabric mills and the same few zip makers, YKK most of all, and a leather weekender is a leather weekender. So what separates a bag that lasts from one that doesn’t is four bits of construction you can check from the spec sheet and the product photos, plus what the warranty actually says.
Zips
The zip is the first thing to fail on any bag, and the brand of it is the one component makers either name or don’t. YKK is the benchmark. Of the bags here, Osprey and Filson say in writing that they use YKK (Osprey’s is a YKK EYL under a rain flap; Filson’s is solid brass). Kenneth Cole describes its zips as self-repairing coil, which is the right type for a bag that gets overstuffed. The others don’t name a supplier on the pages I could read, and I haven’t guessed.
Strap Anchors
Look at where the handles and shoulder strap meet the body. On a technical duffel you want the handle webbing to run under the bag rather than stop at a stitched patch, and you want metal D-rings for the strap. On leather, you want the handle base reinforced with a second layer and stitched, not riveted alone.
The Base
Duffels get put down on wet platforms and gravel, so you need a resilient base to handle that. The North Face uses a separate 840 denier ballistic nylon boot for exactly that reason, and Osprey runs 840 denier fabric on the bottom against 630 on the body. A leather bag has a leather base, which is why mine gets a leather conditioner and the technical bags don’t.
Water Resistance
A coated fabric like The North Face’s PVC-laminated polyester is as close to waterproof as a zipped bag gets. A DWR-treated nylon like Osprey’s sheds rain. Waxed canvas sheds rain until the wax wears, then needs re-waxing. Leather is fine in rain and bad in a puddle. None of these bags is designed for immersion, nor do they claim to be.
Warranty
This is where the bags differ most. Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee covers any damage for any reason, on any product, for the life of the bag, with cosmetic wear excluded. Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee will repair, replace or refund anything that doesn’t perform to your satisfaction, and repairs wear and tear at a reasonable charge.
Filson and The North Face offer a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, which explicitly does not cover wear and tear. Kenneth Cole’s Amazon listing says limited lifetime, but I couldn’t confirm the exact terms.
Will a Duffel Fit as a Carry-On? US and European Sizer Numbers
A suitcase differs from a duffel in that empty of full, a suitcase has pretty much the same dimensions. Most duffel bags are squishy, which is why a 40 litre soft bag goes into an airline sizer that a 40 litre hard case won’t. For something like my leather floto, I don’t tend to aggressively stuff it, and obviously leather is stiffer than nylon. But the general idea applies. You can squish a duffel more than you can squish a hard sided roller bag.
This is why the listed dimensions of a duffel tend to be worst case, and assume they are fully stuffed. Leave some air, and you’re going to be able to squish them a bit. The limits, as of October 2026:
| Airline or rule | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US majors, overhead bin (American, Delta) | 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm) | Including handles. The number every duffel maker’s “carry-on sized” claim is measured against |
| US majors, personal item (American) | 18 x 14 x 8 in (45 x 35 x 20 cm) | Under the seat. The BAGSMART fits this on every axis |
| Ryanair, free small bag | 40 x 30 x 20 cm | Under the seat. No 40 litre duffel passes this |
| Ryanair, Priority cabin bag | 55 x 40 x 20 cm | Paid. 20 cm deep is the tight dimension for any duffel |
| easyJet, small cabin bag | 45 x 36 x 20 cm, max 15 kg | Free for everyone, under the seat |
| easyJet, large cabin bag | 56 x 45 x 25 cm | Paid add-on, or included with easyJet Plus |
Put the picks against those numbers and the US sizer sorts them quickly. The Patagonia 40L is 19.7 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches on Patagonia’s own figures, so it fits with room on every side. The BAGSMART is personal-item sized. Everything else is over on depth: the Osprey by about three inches, the Kenneth Cole, the Filson and the Frye by one, and The North Face Base Camp S by four, which is why it’s in the road-trip column and not this one.
Being over on depth is less of a problem on a soft bag than it sounds, because depth is the dimension that squashes. A half-full Filson goes into a sizer, of course. A full one is a potential conversation with the gate agent. If you fly carry-on only with a strict airline, like many budget European carriers (hello Ryanair) buy the bag that fits on paper and don’t rely on the squash.
On litres, the rule I use is simple. 25 to 35 litres is an overnight or two-night bag. 40 litres is the carry-on bag for up to a week if you pack like we do (packing cubes help here). 50 litres and up is a bag you check or put in the car. The Base Camp S at 50 litres is already quite a lot of bag to carry by hand, and the bigger Base Camps are expedition luggage.
Of course, if the bag is going in a car none of this applies, which is most of the point of a leather weekender.
The Best Travel Duffel Bags in 2026
Specs are the manufacturer’s own unless the line says Amazon. Where I couldn’t confirm a figure from the maker, the spec block says “Not confirmed” instead of a guess. Prices for the Amazon bags come up live under each one.
1. Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L: Best Carry-On Duffel
The Black Hole 40L is the only duffel in this list that is actually sized for carry-on requirements when stuffed. Patagonia lists it at 19.7 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches, which is inside the US 22 x 14 x 9 limit on every axis. Patagonia says itself that it “fits most airline carry-on requirements”. That’s the only technical duffel in this list where the maker’s dimensions and the sizer agree without any squashing.
For a European budget carrier it’s 1.6 cm over on depth against Ryanair’s 20 cm Priority limit, which a not-quite-full bag won’t notice, and under easyJet’s large cabin bag limit.
At 2 lb 4.9 oz (1,045 g) it’s pretty light for a 40 litre bag, which leaves more of your luggage allowance for the things you actually want to bring. The Black Hole family has been one of the most common duffels on climbing trips and photo shoots for years, and the reason is less the fabric than that the bags get thrown around for a decade and don’t come apart.
The warranty backs that up. Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee says that if a product doesn’t perform to your satisfaction you can return it for a repair, replacement or refund, and that damage from wear and tear will be repaired at a reasonable charge. Read that second clause as the useful one: it means a Black Hole with a blown zip in year eight gets fixed rather than binned.
We’ve owned Patagonia gear for years, if not this specific bag, and it in our experience it stands up to pretty much anything we throw at it.
Capacity: 40 L (2,441 cu in)
Dimensions: 19.7 x 12.5 x 8.5 in (50 x 32 x 21.6 cm)
Weight: 2 lb 4.9 oz (1,045 g)
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: Fits on Patagonia’s dimensions
Warranty: Ironclad Guarantee (repair, replace or refund; wear and tear repaired at a reasonable charge)

2. Osprey Transporter Duffel 40: Best Duffel You Can Carry as a Backpack
The Transporter 40 is the duffel for a trip where a bag gets carried a long way, like a city-break with train travel. It has a fully removable backpack harness with a sternum strap that stows in its own pocket when you don’t need it, four webbing grab handles, and loops for a shoulder strap that Osprey sells separately.
Osprey publishes a lot of construction detail for their bags, which I appreciate. The body is 630 denier NanoTough nylon, 100% recycled with a ripstop weave and a carbonate coating, with 840 denier on the base. The main zip is a YKK EYL protected by an oversized rain flap. It weighs 2.11 lb (0.96 kg).
Osprey calls it carry-on sized, but I’d treat that claim with a little caution. On Osprey’s own dimensions of 53 x 32 x 31 cm (20.9 x 12.6 x 12.2 inches) it’s over the US 9 inch depth limit by more than three inches and over every European 20 cm limit by 11 cm. It’s a soft bag and it compresses quite a lot, so you can definitely make it work, but don’t overfill it if you don’t want to be having an argument at the gate.
What is unambiguously Osprey’s is the All Mighty Guarantee: any reason, any product, any era. Osprey repairs any damage or defect free of charge and replaces the bag if it can’t be repaired, excluding cosmetic wear and lost or stolen items.
We’ve owned Osprey bags for decades, including roller bags and daypacks, and they are both comfortable and well made.
Capacity: 40 L (2,441 cu in)
Dimensions: 20.9 x 12.6 x 12.2 in (53 x 32 x 31 cm)
Weight: 2.11 lb (0.96 kg)
Materials: 630D NanoTough recycled nylon ripstop body, 840D base
Zip: YKK EYL with rain flap
Carry: Removable backpack harness with sternum strap, four grab handles, shoulder strap loops (strap sold separately)
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: Over on depth (12.2 in); Osprey calls it carry-on sized
Warranty: All Mighty Guarantee (any reason, any product, functional repairs for life)
Check price at Osprey.
3. The North Face Base Camp Duffel S: Toughest Duffel
The Base Camp Duffel is the bag you see strapped to the roof of a Land Cruiser, and the S is the smallest size that is still recognisably that bag. The body is 1000 denier recycled polyester with a phthalate-free PVC coating, making it closer to a tarpaulin than a fabric, and the base is a separate boot of 840 denier recycled ballistic nylon with a fluorine-free water-repellent finish. You can leave it in a wet car park without a second thought.
It is not a carry-on. The North Face lists the S at 13 x 21 x 13 inches and 50 litres (3,051 cu in), which is four inches over the US depth limit and 13 cm over the European 20 cm limits, and 50 litres is more than most people want to lift into a bin anyway.
It’s the road-trip bag, the checked bag, and the bag for a trip where things are going to get thrown. At 2 lb 10.2 oz (1,195 g) it’s the heaviest technical duffel here, and that weight is all coating and boot.
The warranty is The North Face’s Limited Lifetime Warranty, which covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the practical lifetime of the product. The North Face is clear that it does not cover normal wear and tear, rips, tears or stains from use. The fabric is tough enough that a defects-only warranty rarely gets tested.
Capacity: 50 L (3,051 cu in)
Dimensions: 13 x 21 x 13 in (33 x 53 x 33 cm)
Weight: 2 lb 10.2 oz (1,195 g)
Materials: 1000D recycled polyester with phthalate-free PVC coating; 840D recycled ballistic nylon boot with fluorine-free DWR
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: No (13 in deep)
Warranty: Limited Lifetime Warranty (manufacturing defects; wear and tear excluded)

4. BAGSMART Duffle Bag (Medium): Best Budget Duffel
There’s a job that every one of the bags above is too good for, and that’s being the spare bag. We travel with a pair of thin Outdoor Products duffels that Jess bought for her Kilimanjaro climb in 2014. They pack into their own little stuff sacks, take up no room in a suitcase, and come out as overflow luggage when we’ve bought too much, or as a laundry bag, which is what one of them was on a recent trip through Central Europe. They’ve done over a decade of that. Ours are an older model, and the closest one still sold is the Outdoor Products Mountain Duffel.
The BAGSMART is the current bag for that slot, and it was top of Amazon’s travel duffel bestseller list when I checked in October 2026. The Medium is 16.5 x 7.5 x 11.8 inches, which is within the US personal-item limit on every axis, so it goes under the seat on a budget flight as the “free” bag.
It weighs 385 grams, the fabric is Taslan nylon, there’s a PVC-lined wet pocket for swimwear or a wet towel, and it has web handles and a removable shoulder strap. The link here is to the Medium in Camel; there’s a Large and a Mini.
What you don’t get is a confirmed litre figure, a named zip supplier or a warranty I could find terms for, and at this price that’s about what you’d expect. Buy it as the second bag, use it hard, and if it dies in year three you’ve had your money’s worth several times over.
Capacity: Not confirmed (personal-item sized)
Dimensions: 16.5 x 7.5 x 11.8 in (42 x 19 x 30 cm), Amazon listing
Weight: 385 g (0.85 lb), Amazon listing
Materials: Taslan nylon, PVC-lined wet pocket
Carry: Web handles, removable shoulder strap
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: Fits; also within the 18 x 14 x 8 in personal-item limit
Warranty: Not confirmed
5. Kenneth Cole Reaction Colombian Leather Duffel: Best Leather Weekender for the Money
Amazon lists this as the Kenneth Cole Reaction “Duff Guy”, a name Kenneth Cole’s own site doesn’t use, where it sells a Colombian leather duffle of the same description. Whatever it’s called, it’s a full-grain Colombian leather 20 inch top-loading duffel with twin grab handles and a removable padded shoulder strap that extends to 60 inches, and it costs a fraction of the Filson or the Frye.
That’s the pitch. The Floto I own is a beautiful object and I’ll get to it below, but if you want the look of a leather weekender for hotel weekends and road trips and don’t want to spend heirloom money, start here. Kenneth Cole describes the zips as self-repairing coil, which is a good choice for a bag that gets overfilled, and the single-compartment layout with a shoe section is sensible for two or three nights.
The listed dimensions are 20 x 12 x 10 inches, an inch over the US depth limit, which on a leather bag means it will go into a sizer if it isn’t too full. The weight is the one figure I won’t quote, because the Amazon listing gives two different ones. On the warranty, Amazon’s field says a manufacturer limited lifetime warranty, and I couldn’t find Kenneth Cole’s written terms to tell you what that excludes. Treat it as a defects warranty until you’ve read it.
Capacity: Not confirmed (20 inch duffel)
Dimensions: 20 x 12 x 10 in (51 x 30 x 25 cm), Amazon listing
Weight: Not confirmed (listing gives conflicting figures)
Materials: Full-grain Colombian leather
Zip: Self-repairing coil
Carry: Twin top handles, removable padded shoulder strap to 60 in
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: Over on depth by 1 in (soft; squashes when not full)
Warranty: Limited lifetime per the Amazon listing; terms not confirmed
6. Filson Small Rugged Twill Duffle: Best Canvas Weekender
If leather is a bit much and nylon is a bit little, the Filson Small Duffle is the canvas answer, and it’s the one bag here with a repair culture around it. Filson makes it in the USA from its 100% cotton Rugged Twill with bridle leather handles and trim, sand-cast brass hardware and a solid brass YKK zip that Filson says is rustproof for life. It’s 33 litres, 18 x 11 x 10 inches, which is a long weekend’s worth of clothes.
Filson’s guarantee is a limited lifetime one, against failure of materials and workmanship for the life of the item. Filson lists what it doesn’t cover, and the list includes extreme wear and tear, airline mishandling and animal damage. Filson says repair is its preferred remedy, which is the right instinct for a bag like this.
The trade-offs are the ones that come with waxed cotton. It’s heavier than nylon for the capacity, it needs re-waxing eventually, and at 10 inches deep it’s an inch over the US sizer on paper, though a canvas bag that isn’t full will squash in. The Amazon listing is the Tan Rugged Twill; the Otter Green is on Filson’s own site.
Capacity: 33 L
Dimensions: 18 x 11 x 10 in (46 x 28 x 25 cm)
Weight: Not confirmed by Filson (Amazon lists 2 lb)
Materials: 100% cotton Rugged Twill, bridle leather, sand-cast brass hardware; made in the USA
Zip: Solid brass YKK
Carry: Leather handles, adjustable shoulder strap
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: Over on depth by 1 in (soft; squashes when not full)
Warranty: Limited lifetime (defects in materials and workmanship; extreme wear excluded)
7. Frye Logan Overnight Duffle: Best Premium Leather Weekender
The Frye Logan Overnight is the bag to buy if you want what I have. My Floto isn’t currently available (more on that below), and of the leather weekenders you can actually buy in October 2026 the Logan is the closest in spirit: a plain leather duffel from one of America’s old leather names, in a cognac leather that will pick up marks and age with use, as leather does.
It’s also the bag I can tell you least about from the manufacturer. Frye lists the Logan Overnight on its own site but had it out of stock there when I checked, and gives no weight; Amazon sells it directly and lists it at 18 x 10 x 12 inches. The leather is leather, the strap is adjustable, and I’d take the rest of the Amazon fields with caution. Buy it for the leather and the name. Frye opened its first shop in Marlboro, Massachusetts, in 1863.
On Amazon’s 18 x 10 x 12 inches it’s an inch over the US sizer at its slimmest, which is fine, because nobody buys a leather duffel to argue with a gate agent. It’s a road-trip and hotel bag. I’d not fly with my leather duffle. If you want the same idea for less, the Kenneth Cole above gets you most of the way there.
Capacity: Not confirmed
Dimensions: 18 x 10 x 12 in (46 x 25 x 30 cm), Amazon listing
Weight: Not confirmed (Frye gives none)
Materials: Leather
Carry: Adjustable shoulder strap
Carry-on, US 22 x 14 x 9 in: Over on depth by 1 in
Warranty: Not confirmed
Our Leather Weekender: The Floto Venezia Grande After Three Years
The bag in the photo is a Floto Venezia Grande in tobacco leather, and it was an anniversary present from Jess about three years ago. It’s the same bag you can see at the top of my travel suit post, because the two things go together: it’s the bag I take when the trip has a nice hotel in it and I’m not going to be carrying it very far. Road trips of up to a week are its natural habitat.
Three years in, nothing on it has worn. The zip runs as it did on day one, the handles haven’t stretched, and the strap anchors are tight. I use a leather care product on it, which keeps it looking good.
There’s one small nick in the leather from me being careless with it, and it’s the kind of mark that will be part of the bag in ten years rather than a defect. Jess, who chose it, is firmly of the view that it was a good purchase. She’s right.
What it isn’t is a bag for carrying, so I only take it on trips where I know I’m not going to have to carry it far (more on that below).
I haven’t linked it, because you can’t easily buy one right now. Floto’s own web store was temporarily closed when I wrote this in October 2026, with a notice saying it looks forward to reopening, and the Venezia Grande itself was out of stock through Floto’s Amazon store while some of its other bags were still listed. If it comes back, it’s an easy recommendation. Until then, the Frye above is the closest, and the Kenneth Cole is the sensible version.
Duffel Bag Comparison Table
Dimensions are the manufacturer’s unless the cell says Amazon. “Fits” in the carry-on column means the listed dimensions are inside the US 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit; “over” gives the depth excess, which on a soft bag is the dimension that squashes. “Not confirmed” means I couldn’t establish it from the maker, not that the bag lacks it.

The Photographer’s Two-Bag System
If you travel with a camera, like I do, the duffel is only half the answer, because the camera generally doesn’t go in it. For short trips the setup that works is a duffel for clothes in the overhead bin or the boot, and a camera backpack as the second bag. The camera bag never leaves my side. The duffel can.
That changes which duffel you want. The camera bag is already a backpack, so you don’t need the duffel to be one as well, and a bag like the Patagonia that is light, squashable and sizer-legal is the better partner than a second harnessed bag. The exception is the train weekend, where you’ll carry both for a distance and the Osprey goes on your back with the camera bag on your front.
On a strict airline this only works if the camera bag is small enough to go under the seat as the personal item, because the duffel and a full-size camera backpack won’t both get into the overhead bin. If yours is a full-size pack, the duffel goes in the hold.
Which camera backpack is a longer conversation, and we have it in our guide to the best camera bags for travel. The short answer is that I rotate between two depending on whether the trip is city or outdoors, and neither of them would fit in any duffel on this page.
When a Duffel Is the Wrong Bag
A full leather weekender carried from a station across a city, up a hotel staircase and back again would be a bad afternoon, and it’s the reason my Floto stays at home for any trip with real walking in it. Leather is heavy before you put anything in it, a single shoulder strap puts all of that on one side, and cobbles don’t care how nice the bag looks.
So the rules I’d give you. If the trip involves carrying your luggage for more than a few hundred metres at a time, you want either a duffel with a proper backpack harness (the Osprey), a travel backpack, or a roller bag. The leather bag is for a different trip.
If you’re flying with a strict budget carrier, buy the bag that fits the sizer on paper, which on this page means the Patagonia or the BAGSMART, and skip the one you’re hoping will squash. And if you’re regularly moving more than about 50 litres of stuff, you’ve left duffel territory, and you want wheels.
On wheels: I’ve left wheeled duffels out of this article on purpose. The moment you add a frame and wheels you’ve got a soft suitcase with worse structure and a higher weight, and if that’s the trip you’re on, a suitcase is usually the better buy. Our packable pair is the other end of the same logic. They’re the right bag precisely because there’s so little to them: no structure and almost no weight, and they live inside the real luggage until there’s shopping to carry.
The last rule is the simplest. Read the warranty before you buy. A warranty that covers any damage gets a bag fixed in year eight; one that covers defects only usually doesn’t, and it costs nothing to check which you’re buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best travel duffel bag?
For flying carry-on only, the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L: 40 litres, 19.7 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches on Patagonia’s own figures, so it fits the US 22 x 14 x 9 inch sizer without squashing, and it’s backed by Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee. For a road trip or a hotel weekend where the bag won’t be carried far, a leather weekender like the Kenneth Cole Reaction Colombian leather duffel or the Frye Logan Overnight is the better buy.
What are the best weekender bags?
A weekender is a duffel built to look good instead of to survive a roof rack, usually in leather or waxed canvas, sized for two or three nights. The ones I’d buy are the Kenneth Cole Reaction Colombian leather duffel for the money, the Filson Small Rugged Twill Duffle in canvas, and the Frye Logan Overnight if you want one that lasts decades.
My own is a leather Floto Venezia Grande, three years old and showing no wear, which wasn’t available to buy when I wrote this.
What is the best bag for a weekend trip?
Pick it by how you’re getting there. Flying with a budget airline: a 40 litre technical duffel that fits the sizer, like the Patagonia Black Hole 40L. Driving: a leather or canvas weekender, because weight and size rules don’t apply and it looks right at the hotel. Train and a lot of walking: a duffel with a backpack harness like the Osprey Transporter 40, or a travel backpack.
Is a weekender bag worth it?
Yes, if you take the kind of trips it’s for. A leather weekender costs several times what a nylon duffel does and weighs more empty, so it makes sense on road trips and hotel weekends where it’s carried from the car to the room and nowhere else. Mine has done three years of those with nothing worn, and I expect it to do thirty.
It’s not worth it as your only bag if you fly carry-on with strict airlines or walk a lot with your luggage. For those trips a technical duffel or a travel backpack is better and costs less.
What’s the difference between a duffel bag and a weekender bag?
Shape and purpose rather than size. A duffel in the modern sense is a soft technical bag, usually nylon, built around a big zip and grab handles, often with a backpack harness, and made to be squashed, thrown and rained on.
A weekender is the same basic cylinder or barrel shape made in leather or canvas with structured handles and a shoulder strap, built to look good and last, and never to go on a roof rack. Both come in the 30 to 50 litre range; the duffel is lighter and tougher, the weekender is heavier and better looking.
Can a duffel bag be a carry-on?
Yes, if its dimensions fit the airline’s limit, and a soft bag has an advantage here because the dimension that’s over is usually the depth, which squashes. The US majors allow 22 x 14 x 9 inches in the overhead bin, and the Patagonia Black Hole 40L fits that on its listed dimensions.
Ryanair’s free bag is 40 x 30 x 20 cm and its paid Priority bag 55 x 40 x 20 cm; easyJet’s free small bag is 45 x 36 x 20 cm and its paid large one 56 x 45 x 25 cm. The 20 cm depth is the dimension most 40 litre duffels fail on paper. If you fly carry-on only with a strict airline, buy the bag that fits without squashing.
What size duffel bag is best for travel?
Around 40 litres for a carry-on bag that does up to a week with packing cubes, 25 to 35 litres for an overnight or two-night bag, and 50 litres or more only if you’re checking it or putting it in a car. Above 50 litres a duffel gets heavy to carry by hand and you’re better off with wheels. The 40 litre class is where the Patagonia Black Hole and Osprey Transporter sit, and it’s the size to buy first.
Which brand makes the best duffel bags?
For technical duffels, Patagonia, Osprey and The North Face are the three I’d trust, and the differences are in the warranty more than the fabric: Osprey repairs any damage for any reason, Patagonia repairs or replaces anything that doesn’t satisfy you, and The North Face covers manufacturing defects. For leather, Frye is the heritage name, Kenneth Cole is the value one, and Filson is the canvas benchmark with a repair culture to match. I own a Floto, a leather brand whose web store was temporarily closed in October 2026.
What is the sturdiest duffel bag?
The North Face Base Camp Duffel. The body is 1000 denier recycled polyester with a PVC coating and the base is a separate 840 denier ballistic nylon boot, which is why it’s so often the bag lashed to the roof of an expedition vehicle. It’s a checked or road-trip bag rather than a carry-on, and even the S is 50 litres. For a sturdy bag that still fits a sizer, buy the Patagonia Black Hole 40L.
