On our recent trip to Glasgow Jess and I were both impressed by the amount and quality of the street art in Glasgow. So much so in fact, that of course we wanted to share it with you. In today's post I'm going to take you on a tour of some of our favourite pieces of the street art in Glasgow. These range from murals depicting the sporting history of the city, through to … [Read more...]

In the meantime though, I wanted to share our experiences visiting probably the most famous annual event to take place in New Mexico – the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This is the largest balloon event of its kind in … [Read more...]
Online Travel Photography Course: Learn How to Take Better Photos
When people learn I’m a travel photographer, I am always asked for my advice on how they can take better photos. And what camera I use. But mostly, how to take better photos. The truth is, who doesn’t want to take better pictures? Be they of friends and family, shots from your travels, images to share on social media – everyone loves great photos, and everyone would love to … [Read more...]
Route 66 in California – All the highlights!
Route 66 is without doubt one of the world’s most legendary roads, and a road trip along it is something I’ve always dreamed of doing. In mid-2015, Jess and I had the chance to tour the US and we decided that driving the entire 2,400 mile length of Route 66, from Santa Monica in California, up to Chicago, Illinois, was going to be the definitive road trip for us. With a … [Read more...]

12 Reasons Why You Need A Tripod for Photography
I’m often asked what photography gear I use for my photos. I’m asked so much in fact, that I put together a whole page on this site, dedicated to answering just that question! One piece of photography equipment that I highly recommend is a tripod. In today’s post, I want to explain exactly why you need a tripod for photography, so you can understand the benefits to your … [Read more...]

Sunrise and Sunset at the Grand Canyon: Best Photography Locations
Remember how I went to Yosemite to take pictures and share them with you, as part of my series of photography location guides around the world? Admittedly, Yosemite was a tough act to follow. Maybe I should have aimed a bit lower for my first post in the series. I think, however, I may have found a worthy successor. On a recent road trip through the USA, we stopped off … [Read more...]

The Best Photography Spots In Yosemite
Yosemite is a landscape photographer’s dream. It was here that Ansel Adams took so many of his iconic images, and where countless photographers since then have come to try and capture a little of the wonder of this place. It's no surprise therefore that when I was based in California that it was very high on my list of places to visit, and we finally set aside some time to … [Read more...]

Wanders with my Panasonic Lumix G6, and some thoughts on the camera
Towards the end of 2014 I was contacted by Panasonic UK who asked if I’d be interested in trying out one of the mirrorless cameras from their range – the Panasonic Lumix G6 – as a part of their Lumix G The One programme. For those of you not au-fait with a mirrorless camera, it offers many of the advantages of a traditional SLR camera – interchangeable … [Read more...]
The Landscapes of Glen Coe – A Photo Essay
Glen Coe (also often referred to as Glencoe) is one of the most stunning and well known photography locations in Scotland. I've been lucky enough to visit and photograph this location a number of times, and I wanted to share some photos from my first visit to this location in the form of a photo essay. This trip happened in 2015, when I took a road trip with some fellow … [Read more...]
2014: Highs, Lows, and my 11 Favourite Photos
It’s time for my end of 2014 post! It’s been a heck of a year – starting in Ecuador and finishing in Scotland – with so many moments and adventures in between. It’s not all been highs though, 2014 has had it’s lows as well. It’s also been a great year for photography, so rather than two separate posts, I thought I’d intermingle my highs and lows of the year with some of my … [Read more...]
Impressions of Le Marche: A Wandering Photo Essay
I’m starting to notice I wander a lot. I wandered in Sri Lanka. I wandered through Bologna. I even wandered through Wellington. I do very much enjoy a good wander, particularly if time isn’t on my side. If I’m limited in that resource, then my first choice will always be to just wander around a location and take some photos, to see if I can get at least a feel … [Read more...]
Photographs of Meteora: A Photographer’s Paradise
Meteora first caught my eye in April 2014, when a chap wandered past me with an iPad showing some pictures of landscapes that I knew I had to find time to photograph. I asked him where the pictures were of, and he said Meteora. Fast forward a few months, and I found myself in Athens again doing a whole host of exciting photography related activities, from teaching through to … [Read more...]

In photos: Dubai
Early on in 2014 I whizzed across to Dubai to take part in the Arabian Travel Market – a very large travel show where I was speaking on a variety of topics, from working with professional travel bloggers, through to the importance of mobile in today’s tourism industry. Yep, I do more than take pictures it turns out. However, as it was my first ever visit to Dubai, … [Read more...]
20 Spectacular Photos From Around The World: XV
And so we roll around to version 15 of this post, where I highlight some of my most popular pictures I’ve shared on my Facebook Page from the last month or two. Since the last round up we’ve had the pleasure of visiting Poznan, Dubai and Paris, … [Read more...]
Brief Wanders in Sri Lanka: A Photo Essay
I recently spent a very brief amount of time in Sri Lanka, a country I have never visited before, and where I am helping to set up a conference with the Professional Travel Bloggers Association. In between zipping from location to location, peering at hotel rooms, inspecting conference venues and bravely trying at least nineteen varieties of curry, I managed to get a few … [Read more...]
10 Reasons to Visit Paris. In Photos.
Paris, is, quite frankly, a wonderful city. Stuffed with sights, cafes, and baguette wielding locals, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most visited cities in the world. Today’s post is a photo essay from a weekend I spent in Paris recently. We had what could best be described as “variable” weather, but we managed to get out and see some of the sights and get some photos … [Read more...]
In Photos: 10 Gorgeous Beaches From Around The World
Looking for photos of gorgeous beaches from around the world? Look no further! In today's post I share 10 of my favourite beach photos from our travels. Enjoy! Ok, we’ll start off with a country perhaps not as well known for its beaches as it should be – New Zealand. This is Tolaga Bay beach on the east cape of the North Island. It’s home to a 600m long wharf – … [Read more...]

Fourteen posts in this series. Who’d have thought it? In that time the Facebook Page of this site has grown somewhat, with us about to cross the 100,000 fans line. Naturally we’re delighted about that. Still, not everyone uses Facebook, and even those of you that do probably aren’t on it every minute of the day. So, in case you missed any of the photos we’ve shared there … [Read more...]
Photo Essay of Canoa: The Best Beach Town in Ecuador?
You know what’s nice? Sunsets. And you know what’s even better than sunsets? Sunsets across the ocean, enjoyed from a fine beach, preferably with a cocktail or chilled beer in hand.During our time in Ecuador, we were privy to some rather fine sunsets, but the only place where we really got our sunset-with-beach-with-cocktail-in-hand vibe on was the laid back beach … [Read more...]

Lucky number 13! Time for another round up post of some of the most popular images that we’ve shared on our Facebook Page over the last couple of months. Since the last post we’ve been busy touring Brazil, Ecuador and the Galapagos, so naturally we have photos from those adventures in this collection – as well as a random collection of images from previous travels. We … [Read more...]
Meet the natives: The Wildlife of the Galapagos in Photos
So, landscapes are all well and good, but really, what you want to see from the Galapagos are cute baby sea lion photos, am I right? Finding cute baby sea lions was definitely *not* a problem in the Galapagos, particularly on San Cristobal island, where we practically fell over them all the time, draped over pretty much everything in sight. It’s not all about the sea … [Read more...]
In Photos: Landscapes of the Galapagos
Over Christmas and New Year 2013 we had the pleasure of spending nearly three weeks exploring the incredible Galapagos islands, thanks to a collaboration with Galapagos tour experts GalaKiwi. We’ve been doing so much in the last couple of months that I’ve just not had a moment to compile our most popular images from our Facebook Page into our monthly round-up post! Awful of me, I know. I hope you’ll find it in your heart to forgive me, and take solace in this edition of some of the most popular photos from the last couple of months, as voted upon … [Read more...]

And hello! Another month, another round up of some of the most popular images from the Facebook page over the last few weeks. In other news - I’m about to pop over to both Ireland and … [Read more...]
In photos: Some explosively pretty clouds
It’s coming up on the end of the week, and it seems that the glorious summery weather that Europe has been throwing at us for the last three months or so is coming to an end. Whilst the sun worshippers might be upset, I’m not too bothered. Sure, the dropping temperatures are a bit of a downer, but there are two reasons to be excited – one, the endless blue … [Read more...]
In Photos: From the Facebook Page Edition X
And so we mark the fourteenth month of Facebook Page image roundups with this, the tenth edition. Rather unusually, this month’s update has a lot of portrait oriented shots. Am I auditioning for National Geographic you ask? Well, no (I mean, if they call I’m not going to turn them down). It just seems to have been a vertical sort of month. If you want to follow me on a … [Read more...]
Ostuni: The White City (not Gondor)
As you might know, I’m a bit of a Lord of the Rings fan – that decision to spend a year in New Zealand being somewhat influenced by the Tolkienesque landscapes of that marvellous country. Imagine my excitement therefore when visiting the Brindisi region of Italy recently, to be told that we were going to be taking a trip to the White City. Presumably home to the … [Read more...]
In Photos: From the Facebook Page Edition IX
IX! Finally I get to use an X in my roundups. I know, there are probably more exciting things going on in life, but as I’ve been stuck in bed with a bad back for the last five days, an X is about as thrilling as it gets. Anyhow, by now you know the drill. We’re grabbing some of the most popular photos as shared on the site’s Facebook Page from the last month … [Read more...]
In Photos: The back streets of Brindisi
There is nothing I like better than a good wander, as anyone who has read one of my city guides will attest to. On my recent trip to the rather nice little Italian town of Brindisi I was able to sneak in some time between racing yachts and stuffing myself silly to head out into the wild and uncharted back streets for one of those aforementioned wanders. Here is what I found … [Read more...]
In Photos: My favourite sunsets of the last year or so
In the three years that I’ve been running this blog I’ve done three posts on the theme of sunsets. The first featured largely sunsets from Australia, the second was all about the sunsets of New Zealand, and the third was a happy mix up of various locations as part of yTravelBlog’s Travel Pinspiration series. Still, given my obsession with this natural … [Read more...]
The food of Brindisi: In photos
I am, as has been previously explained, not exactly an awesome food blogger. The problem is that when food arrives I am overwhelmingly tempted to eat it, rather than to photograph it. During my recent trip to the southern part of Italy, and more specifically the town of Brindisi in the Puglia region, I somehow managed to overcome this urge and snap some photos. This probably … [Read more...]
In photos: From the Facebook Page Edition VIII
And so we roll around to edition eight, which is a lovely number in roman numerals and tends to remind me of that English King who spent a lot of time going through wives. As with previous editions, what we’re doing today is sharing some of the most popular photos from the site’s Facebook Page, and putting them all here in one giant post for your viewing pleasure. … [Read more...]
An Instagram tour of Europe
Remember when I was all like “We’re going on an adventure around Europe with Eurail and HostelBookers!”? Well, that adventure is now over, and what a lot of fun we had. Today I’m pleased to share with you some of our … [Read more...]

Once you’ve got to seven of a thing, then I suspect introducing it is probably unnecessary. In fact, I’m not quite sure what I’m going to write in this part of the post any more. The deal, in case the last six of these have passed you by (and good news if that is the case, you’ve got another SIX of these things to look at now!), is that due to the … [Read more...]
Southern Thailand by Instagram
Instagram is brilliant. Unlike other social networks, there’s none of that need to actually pay attention to what people are saying, or doing, or listening to. Instead, you can just gawp at the snapshots of their lives (or, their cups of coffee), and be transported to a world of wonder. I love the way I can follow folks from all over the world, and have a window into what’s … [Read more...]
Travel Pinspiration: Western Australia
It’s been a while since I’ve taken part in a travel Pinspiration. I’m going to blame spending three months of travelling around Thailand, and hope you forgive me. This weeks theme though was a real doozy, and to top it off, the bloggers behind this whole idea, Caz and Craig, used one of my shots for their post this week. Of all the great photos of Western Australia on … [Read more...]

We then post a monthly-ish round up right here on the blog of some of the most popular … [Read more...]
Northern Thailand by Instagram
I love Instagram. Since it became available for Android in early 2012 I’ve been really enjoying the way it lets me share photos of the moments that happen around me in near real-time. I also find the square format to be fun to work with, and find it fascinating what you can achieve with a portable device. We recently spent six weeks exploring the north and north east … [Read more...]
2012 in review – the photo edition
Having looked back at 2012 and ahead to 2013 already,, I thought you might to take a look at our year that was in the medium of photos, with one photo representing each month. We also managed to squeeze in some trips a little further afield, including Germany, Spain and … [Read more...]
The street art of Barcelona
Barcelona is a city with a lot to offer. We've visited a number of times, and always feel that we have so much left to see. Although that’s no bad thing – a return journey to Barcelona is always going to be a pleasure! During our time in Barcelona we've seen all kinds of art, from wanders in the Picasso museum to the magnificently wacky architecture of Gaudi, through to the … [Read more...]
The Black Temple of Chiang Rai
I recently shared with you my experience of visiting the White Temple in Chiang Rai – a fantastical location reminiscent of something Gaudi or Dali might have been happy to have their names associated with. There is another, slightly less visited and more off the beaten path arty type temple in Chiang Rai – the Black Temple or Black House. This isn’t actually a temple at … [Read more...]
In photos: Freiburg im Breisgau
Freiburg im Breisgau. The name just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? This German town is tucked way down in Germany’s south west and serves as the entry point to the Black Forest – famous for its cake as well as its trees. It’s also mostly referred to as Freiburg as the whole name is a bit of a mouthful. Like the cake. Freiburg is also notable for being the sunniest and … [Read more...]
The White Temple of Chiang Rai
If you visit the northern city of Chiang Rai in Thailand, then I can highly recommend a trip to the white temple and the black temple, the former of which is the subject of today’s post, and the latter of which I posted about here. I won't be surprised if you start looking for cheap airfare after you look at the pictures, even if it's just to visit the Temples. They are that … [Read more...]
In photos: Munich
We recently took a road trip across France to Germany, and one of our stopping off points was the Bavarian town of Munich. This is mostly known for being the home of Oktoberfest, where strapping young ladies cart around gigantic jugs of beer to jolly tourists and locals alike. We missed Oktoberfest by the skin of our teeth (although we did get to drink some beer in a large … [Read more...]

In photos: Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai
We recently had the distinct pleasure of exploring the original Thai capital of Sukhothai, the place where the Thai language as it exists today was born, and where much of Thailand’s culture is believed to have originated. Hello, Bangkok. And thanks.
Well, as that incredible photo essay from Nomadic Samuel explained only recently, I’m in Thailand. And more precisely, I’m in Bangkok. A trip which, for a time there I have to admit, worried me a bit more than it excited me. The thing is, and this is a little strange to say, I was a bit apprehensive about setting off for a longer term adventure again. Since the move to … [Read more...]

A tour of the Hobbiton film set, New Zealand
A while back, I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon wandering the Hobbiton movie set, which can be found near the town of Matamata in New Zealand. Instead, I wrote a post about what … [Read more...]

Ballooning in Costa Brava
When I learnt, about a month before I was due to head down to Costa Brava, that I was going to be going on a ballooning trip, I was a teeny bit excited. Ok, so I may have wandered around for roughly the next month in a happy daze, mumbling the word “ballooning” at every opportunity. I was very, very excited. Although, given my history with non-standard means of flight, this … [Read more...]

Visiting Purnululu National Park in Australia (the Bungle Bungles)
The northern half of Australia was one of the highlights of my year long road trip around Oz. And a place that holds a particularly special place in my heart is the World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park, part of the Bungle Bungle Range in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. It even made it into my Unmissable Western Australia post. So today I thought we’d … [Read more...]

Something like 1 in 7 people have a facebook account. Which sounds like a lot, but given that we’re tipping over the seven billion people on the planet mark, that means that there are still six billion of you who are missing out on the zucker-world, which also means you are missing out on all the photos I share on my facebook page, almost daily. Fear not though. Since … [Read more...]
The dark secret of Fitou Castle, southern France

In photos: the 2012 Occitan Piégut Félibrée!
The title of this post is possibly a little boggling if you’re not familiar with some vaguely old French history, which I wasn’t until I did a bit of reading up around the subject. Here’s what I learnt. (Warning – history ahead. Feel free to skip to the photos section if you’re not into it. I won’t tell anyone!) Félibrée & Occitan Facts! Back in the day, some time … [Read more...]
Capture the Colour Photo Contest
I was recently tagged to take part in a photography competition by one of my favourite photographers out there – Dave Bouskill of The Planet D. No sign of a Facebook-like frenzy in sight! So thanks for the … [Read more...]

It has been brought to my attention that not everyone out there has this thing called Facebook. You poor hapless individuals you. In the case of this blog, I share a lot of photos over on Facebook, many of which don’t make it here. Rather than force you into using Facebook merely to keep up with the Joneses, I’m going to address the problem by doing the odd round up post … [Read more...]
In photos: Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter
I found Barcelona to be a remarkably photogenic city. In fact, I’ve already shared some of my favourite photos of Gaudi’s Barcelona. Today I thought I’d highlight Barcelona’s Gothic quarter. This is a very windy, largely pedestrianized part of Barcelona’s city centre. The streets are narrow and looming, making for challenging photography conditions, and the whole place just … [Read more...]
Australia–a land of contrast
I spent a year traversing the vast nation of Australia by four wheel drive, and in that time I took in some absolutely spectacular sights. So, if you want to … [Read more...]

Gaudí. It’s kind of hard to visit Barcelona without spending your time gaping in awe at the architectural and artistic genius that he left behind all over the city. A great deal of my week in Barcelona was therefore spent, gaping in awe, at his many truly incredible constructions. As well as gaping, I was also taking the odd photograph, which I’m sharing with you today. I … [Read more...]

In Photos: Street Art of Angoulême (Part 1)
The town of Angoulême, capital of France’s Charente department, is notable for many things. It boasts an impressive location, high up on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Charente river. And I’m going to save all that for … [Read more...]

For today’s photo theme post I’m sharing with you the quite marvellous Kings Canyon in Australia’s Northern Territory. In photos: Kalbarri coastline and national park
Australia has a lot of coastline – nearly 26,000km of the stuff, according to the CIA world fact book. Driving that distance in a straight line would take you half way around the world. Visiting Wolfe Creek Meteor Crater
Out in Western Australia’s remote outback is the quite remarkable Wolfe Creek Meteor Crater. This was formed as a result of 50,000 tonnes of rock (think large battleship size) crashing into the earth around 300,000 years ago. Made infamous as a result of a 2005 horror film, the crater is an incredible sight, set in truly stunning outback scenery. It isn’t that … [Read more...]
Hiking Cape Raoul, Tasmania
One of my favourite walks in Tasmania was the five hour return hike out to Cape Raoul, on the Tasman Peninsula. This is a hike that takes you though native bush and out to cliff tops with quite frankly terrifying drops. There’s little in the way (ok, nothing in the way) of safety barriers, other than a very ominous sign at the beginning of the trail warning you of pretty … [Read more...]
2011 in photos
We’re on the cusp of entering a New Year. Before we go forward though, I’d like to take a bit of time to have a look back at 2011. I’ve decided to do that in photo form, with photos to represent every month of the year that’s gone. Let’s go! January The year started with us working at a small campsite in the Tongariro National Park on New Zealand’s north island. The … [Read more...]
A year of sunsets
Over a year ago, I did a photo theme post on sunsets. The sun has since set multiple times, and I’ve been lucky enough to witness some spectacular sunsets since that last post, so here, as the year starts to set, are some of my absolute favourites from the past year. Enjoy! Muriwai Beach, New Zealand Otago Peninsula, New Zealand Southern Alps, New Zealand Coming … [Read more...]

My top ten photos of New Zealand
Now that I’m coming to the end of my year long stay in New Zealand, I reckon it’s time to look back at my time here and share with you some of my highlights. I’ve got a number of posts in the pipeline, but first, I just wanted to share with you some of my favourite shots from my trip. I love taking shots of landscapes, and New Zealand happens to have gorgeous landscapes by … [Read more...]
Mighty Mount Cook in photos
Oh New Zealand. How you tempt me. After leaving the west coast and the Queenstown region I thought that was going to be it for mighty mountains. I thought a road trip up the somewhat flat south east coast was going to be the future. But no. You tease me with glorious weather, and force me to turn my nose inwards again, back inland to your incredible alps, reaching down your … [Read more...]
Milford Sound: A Visitor’s Guide
In this post we're going to share everything you need to know to help you visit Milford Sound, one of New Zealand's most spectacular natural attractions. First though, I have a confession to make. In a previous post, I referred to the geological feature known as a Sound as being the New Zealand equivalent of a Fiord. I have come to learn that this is seriously incorrect – … [Read more...]
Glacier Country in Photos
Ah Geography. I remember it well. Teachers with funky patches over their tweed jackets, rambling on about rocks and weather and the importance of using the correct map colouring-in implement. I knew that one day, all that important geography stuff would come in useful. And I am pleased to report, that that day has finally arrived, with my recent trip to New Zealand’s most … [Read more...]
Picton to Nelson with Queen Charlotte
Picton is the first place you come to on New Zealand’s south island, having been wowed by the rather awesome ferry crossing from Wellington. More on that ferry crossing, including some photos of our mill pond like crossing, can be found as part of a guest blog I did for Denise over at NZ Escapes, which can be found here. Once off the ferry however, the amazement does not … [Read more...]
New Zealand’s Spectacular East Cape
The East Cape of New Zealand’s North island has a lot going for it. Driftwood fringed beaches jut up against towering cliffs and deserted roads. Spectacular vistas lie around every corner. And it is perhaps the most Maori influenced part of all New Zealand – the closest one may come to seeing how New Zealand may have ended up had the Brits not landed a couple of centuries … [Read more...]
Climbing Mount Taranaki in photos
Mount Taranaki is the second highest mountain on New Zealand’s north island, at 2517m (around 8500ft for you folks on the imperial system). The climb up it is a gruelling 17km hike, and this is generally regarded as being one of the toughest day hikes you can do on the north island. With this knowledge in our minds, we decided to give it a go. The day we chose was … [Read more...]
Photo theme – holes
Following the positive reception of one of my shots on the site’s Facebook page, I was inspired to continue the theme I started there with a selection of shots on the subject of holes. By holes, I don’t mean holes in the ground, although I do have some shots like that, instead I mean holes that you can peer through to create an interesting photographic … [Read more...]
Photo theme – clouds
Ah, clouds. Giant fluffy bits of candy floss floating leisurely in a perfect sky. Or rain filled destroyers of beach holidays. However you feel about clouds, they pretty much always manage to provide ample opportunity for photography, from sunny days to sunsets, thunderstorms to odd shapes. Here are a few of my more favourite cloud photos, taken over the last couple of years, … [Read more...]
Photo theme – fire
Ah, fire. What a wonderful element. (I know, it’s not an element. Actually, i have no idea what it is. Do enlighten me if you know. Anyway.) You can set stuff on it, you can peer at it, you can warm yourself near it. Coals can be heated up, and food can be cooked over it. It’s about the most primitive way to entertain yourself (well, ok, there are probably a few … [Read more...]
Photo theme – reflections
Today's photo theme post is all about reflections. It seems to be that time of year (the end) when we look back upon what we’ve done in the previous year, and wonder what the future may hold for us ahead. I have a post about that too, certainly, but if words aren’t your thing, here are some photos from previous trips where you get twice as much goodness than normal, … [Read more...]
Photo theme – sand
Ah sand. That gritty stuff that gets everywhere, from sandwiches to camera gear. Still, it does make for some rather pretty photography material, when you’re not busy trying to keep it out of your equipment. Below are some of my more favourite sand based shots that I have taken over the last couple of years, from sand dunes to beaches to just, well, sand blowing. If you … [Read more...]
An alternative tour of Berlin
There is a chap, I am told, who wanders around Berlin by bicycle painting the number six everywhere he can. He has been doing this for a very long time. When questioned, at length, and the layers of slight madness are peeled back, a reason for his number painting is given. It is, apparently, to improve the working of the internet. This was just one of the facts I learnt on the … [Read more...]
Photo theme – Rainbows
Photography. It’s all about capturing the light, and rainbows are a pretty raw form of that substance. I challenge anyone not to be amazed by their colour and beauty, the way they appear to follow you, or run away from you, always elusive, always stunning. Below are some of my favourite rainbow photos that I have taken. If you liked these photos, why not take a look at … [Read more...]
Photo theme – Waterfalls
I always find flowing water to be mesmerising, be it in the form of waves, rivers, or as the case with the photos here, falling over edges. The power of a waterfall can hold my attention for an age, watching the water tumble endlessly onto the ground below. These shots show some of the waterfalls I saw on my trip around Australia. Australia may not have the waterfall height or … [Read more...]
